Sea Change: Benjamin Britten in Lowestoft

Harriet McKenzie and ensemble celebrate Britten, his inspirations and those who were influenced by him, with works that nod to his early music teachers – Frank Bridge and Audrey Alston, as well as by Arvo Part and Deborah Pritchard. Presented by Zeb Soanes, this Sea Change event will also mark the installation late last year of the Britten as a Boy statue on Lowestoft’s upper promenade within sight of his family home.

Together with the Campanella Ensemble and their conductor Sam Scheer, they will bring a magical Peter and the Wolf to this year's Proms Family Festival. Suitable for children over five and their grown ups, we will hear the music, the story and some fantastic illustration happening live on screen as the story is told.

The Leonkoro Quartet’s programme recalls Britten’s deep affinity for the music of Purcell, the ‘English Orpheus’, and includes Britten’s Third String Quartet, the last substantial work that he completed before his death 50 years to this day on 4 December 1976. Broadcaster Zeb Soanes reads extracts from Thomas Mann’s Death in Venice before the performance of String Quartet No. 3.
